Now available: Open Source of Food Metagenomic Data (FMD)

The DOMINO project is dedicated to enhancing publicly available resources that deepen our understanding of the complex science behind fermented foods. To achieve this, we’ve developed the Food Metagenomic Data (FMD) database—which offers insights into the diverse microbial communities present in various fermented products.

FMD is an open source resource that includes 2,533 metagenomes* from 59 different food datasets, covering a variety of food types like cheese, meat, fermented vegetables, wine, kefir, and more. It also provides information on the functions of the metagenomes and includes eukaryotic genomes* that were assembled from these metagenomes.

Overall, the FMD consists of both publicly available and recently DOMINO generated food metagenomes, with the following data available:

  • curated metadata
  • taxonomic profiles
  • functional profile
  • prokaryotic metagenome-assembled genomes
  • eukaryotic metagenome-assembled

*Metagenome refers to the genetic content of any group of microorganisms.
